MEET THE MAKER

Hi, I’m Nikki..

A product designer, colour specialist and textile artist. I create bespoke original artwork which crafts the stories of our human experience: complex and multi-layered, yet quiet and contemplative - a place to celebrate the beautiful and the broken.

Each original piece is inspired by personal stories, narratives and fragments of memories - from people and places. A form of story-telling which is deeply personal: yet something we can all relate to.

Moving picture and all images by Justyna Kulam.

THE DETAILS

Human Emotion

Colour is art, and art is human: crafting the stories of the human experience through textile.

I have always been captivated by the ways in which people experience and perceive life, and how it might differ from my own. We progress through life acquiring a rich patina of individualised experience + consciousness.

But what does this consciousness look like? What is the texture of expectation? How muted is the colour of judgement and fear? And what shape is our joy or our pain?

My work intends to visualise mental narratives: a form of storytelling that I believe we can all relate to - A place to celebrate the beautiful and the broken.

“I’ve always been enchanted by colour. I think creating through colour is simply how I show up in the world – how I ‘do’ things and definitely how I think about and ‘see’ things”

— Nikki Heaton

MY STORY

A Labour of Love

With a creative career spanning almost 2 decades, I stepped sideways from my Senior Colour Specialist role in 2020 to focus on building a freelance art and colour consultancy business around raising my son full time.

I wanted to create a new kind of life for us; one that felt family oriented, full of passion and reflected our new and changing values as a family.

I needed and wanted to work and create (and always will); but I wanted to do it with and around our son.

CONNECTING US

Home

If we reside in our homes, then our homes become human: a symbiosis of function, emotion and support.

Home. Here, we are free to feel our widest range of emotions. We observe a rich patina of  individualised experiences gradually etch upon us: smudges and marks upon our hearts and walls.

Our home is a mixture of old and new, organic and geometric; rough edged meets elegance. I surround myself with a simple, warm and natural earth-tone palette and place high values on comfort, good design, detail, craftmanship, layering and perhaps most of all materiality.

I’m captivated with how things are made along with how they make me feel - to my hands and to my heart.

All these things encompass my values as a person and a designer - and therefore my artwork.

PROVENENCE + MATERIALS

Consciously Curated

Crafted with hands and heart: investing in honest materials and sustainable, transparent production.

It all started with an old pair of jeans…..

My work creates a tension between organic and geometric, rough edged and elegant; with a simple, warm and natural earth-tone palette.

From sourcing through to manufacture; I’ve always felt a necessity to work as consciously as I can. Sustainable textiles, small-batch inks, to FSC certified hardwood; I place high values on good design, detail, craftsmanship, layering and perhaps most of all materiality.

Each stage of my process is curated and considered to ensure a holistic beauty, quality and execution that you can be sure will mirror your own values.

[This Life, We Build (2020) (below). Crafted from a pair of worn denim jeans, it sparked something in my practice which lead me down the path to fully sustainable textile sourcing, and since then I have been crafting exclusively from re-cycled, salvage or waste textile.]

COMMISSION PRICING

Transparent Pricing

I believe art should be enjoyed by all: not a special club that you do not belong to.

I’ve always felt a certain level of anxiety around the ‘enquire’ button on art work. My whole life it felt unattainable (it mainly still is), and I felt perhaps like ‘art’ was a club that I could not belong. So I wouldn’t enquire…I then would never prioritise it or plan to acquire it. I shut it out.

Two of my biggest values is transparency and the attainability of artwork for all. I never want you to feel awkward chatting to me or enquiring about working together, and so I offer a  range of artworks in sizes starting at a lower investment, up to a more sizable commitment, I also create extremely high discount sales at least once per year.

If our values align and my work speaks to you, please reach out. There is always something we can achieve within your budget.
